Efficiency Improvement Services for Range Cookers

Lets get the most important point out of the way first! The best way to improve the efficiency of your cooker, whether solid fuel, oil, gas or even 'traditional' electric, is to convert it to our 'Electrickit' system at the same time as we re-enamel it.

If you plan to stick with your existing fuel source though, and there are many excellent reasons why you would, then we can improve things as part of our refurbishment works.

A range cooker is basically a storage heater. When you cook, you transfer the heat from cooker to food. Reducing heat loss from the range cooker is the easiest way to save money. Lets look at how we do this.

Re-insulating internally under the hob...

Heat rises so most crucial is the insulation under the hob and around the working parts of the range cooker. This is normally a combination of vermiculite and rock wool with the wool sat like a blanket on the top.

The problem is that over time the vermiculite settles and the rock wool deteriorates to a dust like state. This gives you a gap under the enamel hob and means your range cooker needs to work harder to maintain heat.

As part of our works we will hand 'lag' certain vital components with mineral wool, top up the loose insulation (replacing it wholesale if it is the 'talcum powder' old fashioned insulation) and fit a snug new top blanket.

This is a separate line item on our quotes but highly recommended and necessary on almost all jobs. It will bring your cooker up to a standard equivalent to that of brand new cookers.

Re-insulating the doors & lids...

Your re-enamelled doors and lids will be ready made in our workshop with the latest mineral wool insulation, new seals and new liners. Even making sure the doors have new washers and the spring handles are insulated from the enamel castings can make a difference and we'll sort these too!

How much of an improvement we can make depends on the starting point. In the case of older cookers, installed from the 1940's to the 1970's, this can be very significant and it's worth doing on all but the newest cookers installed in the last 10 years or so.
